Roman Achievements: Fully describe two from the following: Mosaics, Arches, Roads, Bridges, Use of Concrete, Water Systems, Ptolemy, Medicine & Medical Instruments, Virgil, the Latin Language
One of Rome's big achievements was the use of arches. Arches were influenced by Egypt, Babylon, and Greece. Anywhere you went in Rome you would see monuments or buildings made with arches. These arches were built for their design and support. Also they would range anywhere from in Ancient Rome’s aqueduct systems to the structure of the Colosseum. The reason why structures as massive as the Colosseum could stand so strongly for such a long time is because they mixed lime and volcanic sand together to make cement bricks. This ensured the arches to hold extra weight for a long period of time. This achievement was a big breakthrough in Roman architecture. ("Roman Arches." Another achievement the Romans discovered was the art of mosaics. Like arches, Rome did not invent mosaics, but instead learned about them from Greece and Crete. Mosaics back then were pictures made of tiles that either told stories, kept record of everyday items, or portrayed Roman activities. They were made out of tons of different materials including marble, tile, glass, smalto (glass paste), pottery, stone and even shells. (Cartwright, Mark. "Roman Mosaics." Ancient History Encyclopedia. June 14, 2013. 12/4/14. http://www.ancient.eu/article/498/) These materials were cut into tiny tiles which were colored in black and white. Eventually they began to use colored tiles for a even more beautiful picture. Mosaics could have been used as floor tile, inside house walls, and counter tops. Even till this day mosaics are stunning pieces of art that are still being made.
